Run? How would it use a Cobol database? Cobol is a programming language. There are GNU Cobol components for compiling (gcc, may have to add an extension), but I've never heard of a Cobol database. I'm working with a Sybase database modeling tool on Windows right now (Power Builder 11) and it can work with basically any database and supposedly reverse engineer obscure ones, so they tell me. I'm going to make a broad statement and say that any ODBC-enabled database will work with Winders and you should be able to get it to work with Linux too. Keypoint and Linux?

A client of mine is running his trucking operation using Transcore's Keypoint Trucking Software. His current server is a 486-DX2 vintage machine running SCO UNIX. He has serial terminals to "shell in" to the server. I'm in charge of upgrading his setup. He wants Windblows clients (XP Home most likely) and a new server. I wanted to know if anyone has successfully converted this software to Linux? Seems like it would/could work. Keypoint wants to sell him a highly overpriced, under-rated SCO server but I'm not interested in supporting a SCO UNIX box. I would like to build the server "in-house" and run some flavor of Linux. Keypoint did say that they have a few clients running RedHat Linux for this purpose. They said it uses a Cobol database. Suggestions or comments? -- RtX... Linux migration study

Hi all, I'm conducting a study for a Harvard Business School professor on the costs associated with migrations between different Linux distributions, and I am looking for companies that have undergone a migration like this. Does anyone have any contacts for IT professionals at large companies (500+ full time employees) who have migrated from one Linux distribution to another? I can provide an honorarium of $200 to the company IT individuals willing to participate in the study. It will involve a 30 to 45-minute phone conversation. I am not looking for external consultants who have done migrations, but specifically someone who works for a large company that has undergone a Linux migration. Lawrence Freenet

Lawrence Freenet is going city-wide on March 1st. http://www.lawrencefreenet.org/ They use wireless networking to cover Lawrence in Internet service, though you can currently only attach to the service through a wireless-to-wired conversion box. They have plans for free WiFi in Downtown Lawrence. Home service costs between $20 and $35 a month, installation is $200 to $0 (depending on length of contract), though low-income families meeting their income guidelines can receive free Internet service with free installation. Part of the program involves handing out a free computer to low-income families, often the same ones who are receiving the free Internet service. I'm suspicious from the costs charged to paying Internet subscribers (as well as the installation fees and contract lengths) that someone has gone all-Windows in the choice of operating system. The free computers are all donated legacy systems, put together by volunteers. Software choices (in addition to bureaucratic costs) could be a major factor in increasing the Lawrence Freenet's costs in their free computer program. From links on the Lawrence Freenet website, their choices appear to be Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. Since the major backer is UNI Computers (http://www.unicomputers.com/) and they make their money off services to Windows users, I'm thinking that the money-saving benefits of Linux aren't being used. Since the broadband connection is a wireless-to-wired conversion box, there will be no issues with Linux wireless NICs as the only connection required is a wired NIC. Develop the system appropriately and most home users won't notice the difference, though to make things easier donating a CUPS compatible printer as well would be appropriate.
